What to Know Before Your Portland USCIS Interview: LocalSurvival Guide

If you have an upcoming green card or naturalization interview at the Portland, Oregon USCIS Field Office (PDX), preparation matters. This guide shares what you need to know—based on local experience—so you’re ready for every step of the process.

Location and Arrival Instructions
USCIS Portland Field Office
1455 NW Overton St, Portland, OR 97209

The office is in the Pearl District. Parking can be limited during morning hours, so arrive early. To avoid having to leave mid-appointment, use the ParkingKittyapp to manage your parking remotely.

You’ll go through security in the lobby. Leave behind food, drinks, and large bags. Bring a valid photo ID and your appointment notice.

For official hours and directions, visit the USCIS Portland Field Office page.

Check-In and Fingerprinting
Take the elevator to the second floor and check in at the front desk. Some applicants are asked to complete digital fingerprinting using both index fingers. You’ll be placed under oath before the interview begins.

What to Expect During the Interview
Your interview depends on your case type, but most follow a similar format:

  • Review of your forms and     supporting documents
  • Verification of identity     and immigration history
  • For marriage-based green     cards: questions about your relationship
  • For naturalization:     civics test and English reading/writing evaluation

To prepare for the citizenship test, visit the USCIS Civics Test Guide.

Applicants have reported wait times of up to one hour before being called. Plan accordingly.

Interpreter Update: June 2025
As of June 2025, USCIS is experiencing interpreter shortages at the Portland office. If you do not bring your own interpreter, your interview may be rescheduled. You may bring someone fluent in English and your language who is not a party to the case and can present valid ID.

Local Tips to Help You Prepare

  • There is no mask     requirement as of June 2025.
  • Dress professionally and     bring all required documents: passport, birth certificate, marriage     certificate (if applicable), pay stubs, and tax records.
  • If you’re unsure what to     bring, your attorney can review your checklist in advance.

After the Interview
If your case is approved, you may receive a verbal confirmation. Naturalization applicants are usually scheduled for an oath ceremony within one to three months. If more documentation is needed, you may receive a Request for Evidence or be asked to return.

To track case progress, use the USCIS Case Status Tool or USCIS Processing Times.
